Online Shopping Tips For the Holidays
September 25th, 2008 by faith
The busiest times of the year for shoppers is the holiday season. Department stores are jam-packed and the queue to the cashier is frustratingly long. For this holiday season, I would rather do most of my shopping online. I know many of you have issues about security and all that stuff. Still, if you take the right precautions, it can be the easiest holiday shopping you have ever had. It’s also a fact that some items are cheaper online because there are coupon codes that can chop off a good chunk off the retail price. Here are some useful tips for your holiday shopping:
- Prepare a list of the gifts you are targeting to buy. It’s easier if you have an idea what to look for online.
- Once you find a product you want to purchase, open a new window in your browser first and search for discount coupon codes which you can apply to your purchase. There are several sites that provide these without any fees. You may be able to save on shipping or get a few percentages off the list price if you’re just diligent enough.
- It would also be good to make a thorough search of the product in other online stores to get the lowest price. I’ve experienced buying something that is more than 30% cheaper just because I searched for other stores that may have it in stock.
- When you purchase something online, print out a receipt of the transaction or product ordered. If you fail to receive what you ordered, you have proof.
- If you order from a site and are emailed for passwords or personal information, don’t give it out. If it’s legitimate, you’ll receive a call to confirm information. Legitimate transactions never ask for you to email your username/password to them.
- Confirm payments only with pages where the browser lock icon (the image of a lock at the end of the url) is present. Another sign of a secure order URL is when it begins with HTTPS where s means secure.
- If you’re shopping on an online auction or the sort, watch out for references to ‘refurbished’ or ‘close-out’ products especially when the price is really low. Don’t expect a new product to come in the mail, they’re letting you know. If a product is advertised as new, keep a print-out of the description in case you receive a used item.
- Make note of a company’s return policies. Read the fine print for procedures on exchanges or full refunds so you know what to expect before you click ‘order.’
- Sign up to receive a website’s newsletter, so you’ll be notified of any three-day weekend or one-day sales.
- Never click ‘order’ or ‘buy’ twice. There are plenty of instances where your credit card is charged double, which could take some time to fix.
- Make sure you have a comprehensive Internet security software product installed on your PC to prevent any password-stealing pop-up’s or phishing attempts. There are free applications online if you just search for them.
With these tips in mind, you will not go wrong with your online holiday shopping. You save on gas and you don’t have to queue up and wait to pay for your item. And of course, you save yourself the trouble of carrying heavy loads while you scout around for the best gifts this season.
